JP Centre/South Main Streets (JP CSMS) At a Glance
Our Focus JP Centre/South is a community-driven, non-profit organization working to enhance the Centre/South business district while maintaining its historic and artistic character. We are composed of residents, merchants, landlords, and other community organizations who work together to make Centre/South a great place to live and work.
History
- In 1980 the National Main Street Center was launched to help towns across the country revitalize their commercial areas.
- In 1983 Mayor Thomas Menino, then a city councilor, sought the assistance of the National Main Street Center for the revitalization of Roslindale Center . The experiment was a resounding success.
- In 1995 Mayor Menino established Boston Main Streets, a group of ten non-profit organizations set up to revitalize their business neighborhoods.
- JP Centre/South Main Streets was established in 2002, joining the other Main Street programs in Jamaica Plain for Hyde/Jackson Square and Egleston Square .
- There are now 19 Main Street programs in Boston .

Organizational Structure
JP CSMS is led by a volunteer Board of Directors and Randace Moore, JPCS Executive Director
The majority of the organization’s initiatives flow from its committees which are comprised of resident volunteers who give their time and expertise to support JP Centre/South’s mission.
Committees include:
- Promotion/Events - First Thursdays, Artists Ball, and others
- Economic Restructuring (ER) - new business recruitment, shopper surveys and studies to help businesses be more competitive, hosting community meetings
- Design - manages the Storefront Improvement Program and providing design assistance to business owners
